TOKYO, JAPAN 16 October 2026—Kyoto Fusioneering (KF), a leading global fusion energy engineering company based in Tokyo, today paid a courtesy call on Corin Robertson CMG, His Majesty’s Ambassador-Designate to Japan, at the British Embassy Tokyo. Satoshi Konishi, Chairman and CEO, and Kiyoshi Seko, President and COO, met the Ambassador-Designate, who took up her post in August 2026.

During the meeting, KF briefed the Ambassador-Designate on Project ALBION (Advanced Lithium Breeder Irradiation for Operations & Neutronics), its programme to strengthen breeder blanket development in the UK, and conveyed its commitment to further accelerating Japan-UK collaboration in fusion energy under the Japan-UK Memorandum of Cooperation on Fusion signed in June 2025.

Advancing breeder blanket development in the UK

The breeder blanket produces tritium fuel inside a fusion power plant while extracting heat, and is widely regarded as one of the most challenging components for future fusion power stations.

Since establishing its presence in the UK in 2021, KF has collaborated with the UK Atomic Energy Authority (UKAEA) in the fields of plasma heating systems, tritium capabilities, and fusion materials development. Announced in September 2026 at the start of the inaugural ‘UK Fusion Week’, Project ALBION is KF’s largest undertaking in the UK to date.

Under the programme, KF will design and manufacture a lithium oxide (Li₂O) solid breeder blanket experiment and initiate irradiation testing with online tritium measurement capability. KF is also expanding its Culham-based team at Kyoto Fusioneering UK, strengthening the site’s research and development capabilities. Ahead of the announcement, on 14 September, KF also briefed Michael Shanks, Minister of State at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ), on the programme.

Looking ahead

KF will continue to work with research institutions and industry in the UK, advancing technology development and recruiting talent at its UK base. Within the framework of cooperation between the Japanese and UK governments, KF aims to translate Japan-UK collaboration into tangible results from an industry standpoint and to contribute to the early realisation of fusion energy.

According to Satoshi Konishi, Chairman and CEO of Kyoto Fusioneering:

“It was a great honour to brief Ambassador-Designate Robertson, so soon after her arrival in Japan, on our breeder blanket development in the UK. The UK has led global fusion research for decades and is an indispensable partner for KF, in both technology development and talent. In line with the direction set out in the Memorandum of Cooperation between our two governments, we will continue to give concrete shape to Japan-UK collaboration from the industrial front line and contribute to the early realisation of fusion energy.”
