Mapping Uncharted Territory in the Fusion Energy Industry

For many years, I have conducted research at universities and research institutions in Japan and around the world, while contributing to international collaboration projects including the ITER project. Throughout this journey, I have focused on the engineering disciplines essential to making fusion energy a reality.

Technologies once discussed as ideals within the laboratory are now on the verge of making a decisive transition from science to industry.

Just as those who came before us built the power grids that transformed society, it is now our turn to harness fusion energy to power the next chapter of civilization.

I look forward to working alongside those who share our ambition to build the energy of the future.

Satoshi Konishi

Co-Founder, Representative Director, CEO, Chief Fusioneer

  • From scientific ambition to humanity’s long-term prosperity.
Charting the unexplored “territory of the fusion energy industry.”
For many years, I have pursued fusion research in academia, working at research institutes and universities in Japan and overseas, and participating in the “ITER”, the international project to demonstrate fusion energy. My focus has been on engineering technologies that are essential to turning fusion from a scientific aspiration into a practical reality. What was once discussed mainly in laboratories is now moving decisively from the realm of “science” into the realm of “industry.”

    Bridging “research” and “industry”

Fusion energy is no longer just a research theme. It is becoming a large-scale systems industry tied directly to some of the most urgent challenges shaping the future of nations and society: decarbonization and energy security.

Humanity cannot move forward unless we find a way to provide energy for everyone while protecting the global environment. What this field needs now are people who can translate advanced knowledge in physics and engineering into practical engineering, economic viability, and social implementation. Our mission is to stand at the intersection of cutting-edge “research” and real-world “industry.”

Turning the laws of physics into working systems

At Kyoto Fusioneering, we are taking on the challenge of bringing fusion energy into society. Our work spans reactor engineering, including plasma heating, blankets, and thermal and fuel cycles, as we build energy systems that have never existed before and deliver them to industry and society.

There are no established playbooks and no ready-made answers. How do we control physical phenomena under extreme conditions and operate them as stable systems? Here, professionals who have honed their expertise in each field come together to help create the global de facto standards themselves. That is the unique impact and excitement of this work. Our goal is not only to create innovation, but to embed it in society as an industry, deliver its benefits to people, and make it sustainable as a business.

Around the world, companies that began in garages only a few decades ago have transformed economies and everyday life. Japan has yet to produce a company of that kind on the same scale. Kyoto Fusioneering exists to take on that challenge.

Combining “academic integrity” with “industrial discipline”

As a startup originating from Kyoto University, we inherit a deep base of knowledge built through years of research. At the same time, we value the speed, accountability, and discipline required to succeed in industry.

Science does not take shortcuts, and technology cannot be rushed past its limits. True innovation is created by moving forward step by step, learning from setbacks, and overcoming difficulties with persistence. We respect the culture of research while connecting it to the outcomes society needs. We believe this “fusion of knowledge and execution” is the only path to opening a new era of energy.

Energy is essential to everyone, and that is why it must be handled with the highest standards of safety, ethics, and responsibility. Just as previous generations built power grids and transformed society, it is now our turn to support the next civilization through fusion energy.

We are looking for teammates who are ready to help create the energy of the future with us.

  • Your expertise can become the “first page” of a new industry.
At Kyoto Fusioneering, we aim to help solve two of humanity’s greatest challenges—decarbonization and energy security—through fusion energy.
But this is not only about the world or society. As we build a new industry, we also care deeply about how each person works, grows, and finds meaning in their career.
That is an important part of what we want to offer.

Lead the dawn of a massive new industry from the front line

We are at a historic turning point, as fusion energy moves from “research” toward “social implementation.” The reactor engineering technologies and peripheral systems we develop and supply form the foundation of fusion projects around the world, and they are essential to launching the industry itself. For those who work here, this means a rare opportunity to help lead world-class technology and build the foundations of a new industry from the ground up. Being part of this phase can become a defining experience in your career.

Turn your work into business, organizational strength, and social impact

There are no manuals here, and no one has prepared the right answers in advance. That is why your work—whether in plant design, plasma control, procurement, business development, corporate functions, legal, or safety management—can become part of the foundation for future industry standards. In the rare and rapidly evolving field of fusion energy, the challenges you tackle every day are directly connected to solving global climate and resource issues and creating next-generation industries. This is a place where you can feel the impact of your work in a very real way.

Bring together “exceptional individuals” to create the future

We are looking for people who want to create positive social impact through their work, who aspire to become truly excellent in their own fields, and who continue to refine their expertise with persistence and integrity. That aspiration, combined with the drive and curiosity to keep taking on challenges humanity has never solved before, is what powers our business forward.

When these “exceptional individuals” connect across disciplines, we believe we can make the seemingly impossible possible: the social implementation of fusion energy. Kyoto Fusioneering is a rare place where professionals can take on that challenge on a global scale.

“What role can my expertise play in bringing this technology to society?” By asking that question, positioning your work within the bigger picture, and collaborating with colleagues in Japan and around the world, you can move into areas that no individual could reach alone. Together with your teammates, you will navigate complexity and uncertainty, and turn your expertise into organizational strength. We invite you to become one of the people driving this transformation—and to help change society with us.
In your interview, we hope you will share that vision of the future in your own words. New encounters, new possibilities, and a future that may not exist on the extension of your current path are waiting here.
