Kyoto Fusioneering (KF), a global pioneer in fusion solutions, proudly launches its newest subsidiary in Seattle, Washington, U.S. As part of KF’s ongoing effort to drive the global fusion industry forward, this new office will deepen collaboration with national laboratories, universities, private fusion companies, and the U.S. government.
KF brings some of the world’s most advanced and innovative fusion engineering technologies to the U.S. market and creates vital high tech jobs, securing the fusion supply chain and paving the way for successful fusion commercialization and a sustainable energy future.
Development of critical plant components is vital for realizing the potential of fusion energy. While peers and collaborators focus on developing plasma core technology, KF is identifying vulnerabilities in the global fusion supply chain, and developing reliable and economically viable plant components. Through its efforts, the company is building international partnerships that diversify U.S. production of fusion plant components and leveraging Japan’s world-leading engineering ecosystem to advance the global fusion industry.
Founded in 2019, KF continues to expand its global footprint with the opening of its latest subsidiary in the U.S. Headquartered in Japan, KF now has offices in three countries, including Japan and the United Kingdom.
“We are very pleased that we have been able to commence full-scale operations of our U.S. subsidiary. We are already in daily discussions with start-up companies in the U.S. on methods of extracting heat from fusion reactors and transporting it to power generation facilities, as well as on the fuel cycle mechanism, with the aim of realising stable operation using each of these methods. We are determined to make full use of the technical capabilities and know-how we have developed in Japan over many years to promote our business in the U.S., with the aim of realising fusion energy as soon as possible,” said Taka Nagao, CEO of Kyoto Fusioneering.
The U.S. government has been a steadfast supporter of fusion research for over 70 years, investing in public funding to advance the technology. In 2022, the government announced a bold decadal vision to further accelerate the development of fusion energy. Additionally, private investment in fusion technology in the U.S. has grown tremendously, totalling over $2.5 billion in 2021. These investments reflect a growing recognition of fusion’s potential to revolutionize the energy sector and a commitment to making fusion a reality.
KF’s new subsidiary in the U.S. allows the company to bring its expertise in critical plant technologies to the forefront of the fusion landscape. KF’s offerings include high-power, high-frequency microwave gyrotrons for plasma heating, advanced blankets for high-temperature extraction using silicon carbide, including KF SCYLLA© design, advanced divertor systems, and exhaust pumps for recovery and recycling of unburned fuel. With its presence in the U.S., KF is well-positioned to support the world’s efforts in advancing fusion technology and realizing its potential as a revolutionary energy source.
